Radio-controlled and solar-powered, so it sets itself and never needs a battery. The SSG009 pairs that with a world time bezel covering 25 cities and a 44.5mm steel case that wears every bit as large as the number suggests.
About The Product
Seiko SSG009: A Watch That Sets Itself and Never Needs a Battery
Most watches ask something of you. Wind them, set them, replace the cell every couple of years. The Coutura SSG009 asks for daylight and nothing else. Its solar cell handles power, a radio receiver handles the time, and the result is a chronograph that stays accurate without your involvement. That combination has been Seiko’s quiet specialty for years, and this is one of the more usable versions of it.
The 8B92 Does the Work
Caliber 8B92 is a solar quartz movement with radio sync built in. It listens for the atomic time signal, adjusts the time and the date on its own, and runs about six months in the dark on a full charge. There is a signal reception indicator on the dial so you know whether it actually caught the broadcast. No hand-setting, no battery appointments, no drift to correct.
Twenty-Five Cities on the Bezel
The fixed bezel is printed with city codes: NYC, LON, PAR, DXB, TYO, and twenty more. It works with the 24-hour subdial to give you a second time zone at a glance, which makes this a genuinely useful travel watch rather than one that just says “world time” on the dial. The chronograph runs to 60 minutes in fifth-second increments with a split function.
44.5mm Wears Like 44.5mm
This is a big watch. The case measures 44.5mm across and 11.5mm thick, and the wide steel bracelet, tapering to 26mm at the lugs, does nothing to make it look smaller. If your wrist is under about 7 inches, try it before you commit. What you get for the size is legibility: large applied indices with LumiBrite, a textured black dial, and blue rings around the subdials that keep the layout readable instead of cluttered.
The Bottom Line
Sapphire crystal, 100m of water resistance, and a set-and-forget movement put the SSG009 in the category of watches you can wear for years without thinking about them. It is not subtle and it is not trying to be. If you want a large steel chronograph that is always right, this is a straightforward way to get one.
