Seiko HFL003: The Rotocall Goes Gold, and the Display Goes Dark

The Rotocall is one of Seiko’s odder archive ideas, and the HFL003 is the version that leans furthest into it. The original arrived in 1982 with an octagonal rotary bezel that acted as the mode selector: instead of hunting for the right pusher, you turn the bezel to land on TIME, TIME SET, TIMER, COUNTER, STOP W., DUAL T., DAILY-AL. or SINGLE-AL. The 2026 reissues keep that interface intact and change two things that matter, gold-tone finishing and a reverse LCD.

Reverse LCD Changes the Whole Character

The 2025 Rotocall colorways used a conventional positive display, dark digits on a light ground. The HFL003 flips it: gray digits glowing out of a black screen, framed by a gold chapter ring and a black-and-gold bezel. It reads more serious than the earlier versions, which is a strange thing to say about a watch with a spinning mode dial. The HFL002 is the silver sibling if you want the display without the gold.

A Digital Watch With a Mechanical Habit

The bezel is the point. Most digital watches ask you to memorize which button does what and how long to hold it. Here the mode is something you can see and feel, which makes a deep function set easy to move through: chronograph to 100 hours in 1/100 second increments, a single-time alarm, a 100-minute timer, dual time, a counter, full auto calendar through 2074, and an LED backlight. The A824 quartz caliber behind it runs to plus or minus 20 seconds a month on roughly three years of battery.

Small Case, Real Steel

At 37.0mm across, 10.6mm thick, and 43.5mm lug to lug, it wears well under a cuff despite how busy the dial looks in photos. The case and five-row bracelet are gold-tone stainless steel with circular brushing, not plated plastic, and the whole thing comes in at 108 grams. Hardlex crystal, screw case back, three-fold push-button clasp, 20mm lugs, and 100m water resistance make it more watch than nostalgia usually gets you.

The Bottom Line

This is for someone who likes Seiko’s weird corners as much as its divers, and who wants the gold version to look deliberate rather than loud. Hardlex instead of sapphire is the honest trade-off, and gold-tone plating shows wear differently than plain steel does. If that gives you pause, take the HFL002. If it doesn’t, this is the most characterful thing in Seiko’s digital catalog.
