Radio-controlled and solar-powered, so the SSG021 sets itself and never needs a battery. The blue inner bezel tracks 25 time zones, and the black ion case and bracelet keep the whole watch dark.
About The Product
Seiko SSG021: The Coutura That Sets Itself
The Coutura line is where Seiko puts its quietly clever technology into a case people will actually wear to the office, and the SSG021 is the sharpest-looking version of that idea. Black ion coating over stainless steel, a patterned black dial, and a blue inner ring that turns the whole thing into a world timer. It is a lot of watch at 44.5mm, and it does not apologize for that.
Radio Sync, Explained
The 8B92 caliber listens for the official time signals broadcast in the United States, Japan, China, and Germany, then corrects the hands and the calendar on its own. Practically speaking, you take it out of the box, leave it near a window, and stop thinking about accuracy. If it cannot hear a signal, it holds to about fifteen seconds a month, which is normal quartz territory. The solar cell handles power: six months of running on a full charge, roughly two years in power save, and no battery service ever.
Reading the Blue Ring
Twenty-five city codes ring the dial in blue, and the crown rotates the inner disc so your reference city lines up with the 24-hour scale. It takes a minute with the manual the first time. After that it is genuinely useful if you deal with people in other time zones, and it is the reason this watch reads as busy rather than plain. The chronograph runs to 60 minutes in fifth-of-a-second increments with split timing, and the date sits at three.
Living With the Black Ion
Ion plating on a bracelet is a trade-off worth naming. It looks excellent and it resists scratching better than raw steel, but a deep gouge shows the silver underneath and cannot be polished out. If you are hard on watches, know that going in. The sapphire crystal has no such caveat, and 100m of water resistance covers swimming without inviting a dive.
The Bottom Line
This one suits someone who wants set-and-forget accuracy, likes a large dark watch, and travels enough to use the city ring. If you prefer something under 42mm or dislike busy dials, look elsewhere in the Coutura range.
