Seiko HFL002: The Digital Watch That Went to Space, Rebuilt

In 1982 Seiko released a digital watch with an idea nobody else had: instead of cycling modes with a pusher, you turned the bezel. The reference was the A829, collectors came to call it the “Seiko Astronaut,” and it flew on the Space Shuttle with crew members including Sally Ride and Anna Fisher. The HFL002 is the current production version of that watch, and Seiko has now made “Rotocall” the official name.

Turn the Bezel, Change the Mode

The rotary switch is the whole point. The octagonal bezel is labeled TIME, TIME SET, TIMER, COUNTER, STOP W., DUAL T., DAILY-AL. and SINGLE-AL., and you rotate to whichever one you want. It is a mechanical solution to a software problem, and it is genuinely faster than remembering which of four buttons does what. The notched bezel edge exists so you can work it with gloves on, which is why it went to orbit in the first place.

Caliber A824

Seiko’s A824 runs to within 20 seconds a month on a battery good for roughly three years. The function list is long for a watch this old in spirit: a 1/100-second chronograph that counts to 100 hours, a countdown timer to 100 minutes, a single-time alarm, dual time, a full auto calendar programmed through 31 December 2074, a battery-end warning, and LED backlighting behind the reverse LCD.

Small, Steel, and Angular

The case is 37.0mm wide, 10.6mm thick, and 43.5mm lug to lug, on a five-row steel bracelet with 20mm lugs and a push-button three-fold clasp. That is a compact watch by modern digital standards, and at 108 grams it does not wear heavy. A Hardlex crystal, a screw case back, and 10 bar of water resistance cover the practical side.

The Honest Version

At $550 this is not competing with a $60 Casio on value, and it is not trying to. You are paying for a specific piece of Seiko’s history in steel rather than resin, with a control layout no one else builds. The crystal is Hardlex, not sapphire, and 37mm will read small if you are used to a G-Shock. If the octagonal bezel and the space-program story are what pulled you in, this is the silver version; the HFL003 is the same watch in gold tone.
