Seiko put a compass bezel on its most accessible field watch. The HDB007’s silver-white dial stays legible in any light, and the 4R36 automatic underneath is the same movement enthusiasts have been servicing and modding for years.

Seiko HDB007: The Field Watch That Points North

Seiko has been selling cheap, tough field watches for decades, and the 5 Sports Field line is where most people meet them. For 2026 Seiko added something genuinely useful instead of another colorway: a compass bezel. The HDB007 is the silver-white dial version on a steel bracelet, and it is the one that looks least like a tool and behaves most like one.

How the Compass Bezel Actually Works

The bezel is bidirectional and marked N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW, with a lumed pearl at north. Point the hour hand at the sun, rotate the bezel so that south sits halfway between the hour hand and 12, and you have a rough bearing. It is a scout trick, not satellite navigation, but it works and it costs you nothing to carry. The knurled diamond-pattern edge gives you enough grip to turn it with gloves on.

The 4R36 Underneath

Caliber 4R36: automatic with manual winding, hacking seconds, day-date, 24 jewels, about 41 hours of reserve. It is not chronometer-grade and Seiko has never claimed it is. What it is instead is proven and cheap to service, which is exactly what you want in a watch you plan to wear outdoors and not think about. The see-through caseback lets you watch it run.

Wearing 41mm That Doesn’t Wear Like 41mm

The case is 41mm across and 13.2mm thick, which sounds substantial until you see the 48.5mm lug-to-lug. That is short for the diameter, so the watch sits inside most wrists rather than hanging over them. The dial is a glossy silver-white with large LumiBrite Arabic numerals and a 24-hour inner track, and it reads instantly in daylight or dark.

The Hardlex Question

The crystal is curved Hardlex, not sapphire, and that is the one spec people will argue about. Hardlex resists shattering better than sapphire and scratches more easily. At this price, in this line, it is the trade Seiko has always made. If a scratch-free crystal matters more to you than the bracelet, the rest of the range gives you options; if you want a 100m field watch with a compass on the bezel that you can hand to anyone, this is it.
