Seiko shrank the Cocktail Time to 38.5mm for 2026, and the HCB003 takes the warm route: a textured brown dial that reads bronze in one light and espresso in the next, with rose gold hands and the proven 4R35 automatic underneath.

Seiko HCB003: The Cocktail Time, Finally at 38.5mm

The Presage Cocktail Time has been one of Seiko’s most recommended dress watches for years, with one persistent complaint attached to it: at 40.5mm wide and 47.4mm lug-to-lug, it was a size too big for the wrists it kept getting recommended to. The 2026 refresh fixes that. The HCB003 measures 38.5mm across with a 45.4mm lug-to-lug and 11.8mm of thickness, which is the version people have been asking Seiko for since roughly 2017.

A Brown Dial That Isn’t Just Brown

Where the older Cocktail Times leaned on flat sunburst finishes, the HCB003’s dial is textured, and it changes character depending on how you hold it. Straight on it reads as a deep espresso; tilt it and the center opens up into bronze and copper. The applied indices and hands are rose gold-toned, which is the right call against this dial rather than the usual white gold-tone, and the date sits quietly at 4:30 where it doesn’t interrupt the layout.

The 4R35: Proven, Not Fancy

Inside is Seiko’s 4R35 — automatic with manual winding, hacking seconds, date, 23 jewels, 21,600 vph, and roughly 41 hours of reserve. It isn’t chronometer-grade and Seiko doesn’t claim it is. What it is: reliable, widely serviceable, and the same movement family running in most of the Presage line. You can watch it work through the screw-down exhibition caseback.

Where Seiko Saved Money

The crystal is box-shaped Hardlex, not sapphire. The box profile is period-correct and gives the dial that slight edge distortion that makes vintage-style watches look the way they do, but Hardlex scratches more easily than sapphire — worth knowing before you buy. Water resistance is 50m, which covers rain and hand-washing and nothing more ambitious. The brown cow leather strap runs 20mm with quick-release spring bars and a three-fold push-button clasp, so swapping it takes about a minute.

The Bottom Line

This is the Cocktail Time for anyone who tried the 40.5mm version and found it wearing wide. On a 6.5- to 7-inch wrist the HCB003 sits properly, and the brown dial is the least common of the three new colorways. If you want sapphire and a longer power reserve, Seiko sells that higher up the Presage range. If you want a mechanical dress watch that looks more expensive than it is, this is the one.
