The Field series with a 24-hour hand added. Seiko’s 4R34 automatic drives an independently set second time zone, the fixed bezel carries the scale, and the forest green dial has a fine grain that cuts glare instead of throwing it back at you.

Seiko HDB001: A Field Watch That Keeps Two Time Zones

The Seiko 5 Sports Field line has been quietly good for a while now: honest proportions, dials you can read without thinking, and a movement that any watchmaker can service. The HDB001 takes that and adds a 24-hour hand with an orange tip, which is enough to turn a straightforward field watch into one you would actually pack.

Forest Green With Grain, Not Just Color

The dial is not flat green. Seiko gave it a fine textured grain that scatters light rather than bouncing it back, so the LumiBrite-filled Arabic numerals stay legible at angles where a glossy dial washes out. The orange GMT hand is the only loud thing on the dial, and it earns the attention.

The 4R34, and What Kind of GMT It Is

Worth being direct about this one: the 4R34 is a caller GMT. You set local time the usual way, then move the 24-hour hand independently to a second zone. The local hour hand does not jump in one-hour steps the way a traveler GMT does. If you are calling Tokyo from Los Angeles, that is exactly the right tool. If you cross time zones every other week, you will be resetting more than you would like. The rest of the spec is familiar 4R territory: 24 jewels, 21,600 vph, a 41-hour reserve, hacking seconds, and hand-winding.

39.4mm That Wears Like 39.4mm

The steel case is 13.6mm thick with 47.9mm lug-to-lug, so it sits close and does not overhang. The fixed bezel carries the 24-hour scale engraved into steel rather than a rotating insert, and the curved Hardlex crystal keeps the same low profile. Water resistance is 100m with 4,800 A/m of magnetic resistance, which covers ordinary life. The five-link bracelet runs on 20mm lugs with a three-fold push-button clasp.

Who It Suits

Someone who wants a field watch first and a second time zone second. The exhibition caseback is a generous touch at this end of the catalog, and 39.4mm is a size that works on a lot of wrists without any negotiation.
