Seiko shrank Cocktail Time to 38.5mm and gave it a textured green dial that reads flat green in one light and mottled jade in the next. The 4R35 automatic sits behind a box Hardlex crystal and an exhibition caseback.
About The Product
Seiko HCB002: Cocktail Time, Downsized and Textured
Cocktail Time has been Seiko’s answer to “I want a mechanical watch that looks good with a jacket and doesn’t cost four figures” for years now. The 2026 refresh does two things worth caring about: it pulls the case down to 38.5mm, and it swaps the old sunburst treatment for a textured finish Seiko is calling crushed ice. The HCB002 is the green one, on brown cow leather.
A Dial That Refuses to Sit Still
Straight on and lit evenly, it reads as a deep green with a darker gradient toward the rim. Tilt it and the texture shows up – a mottled, frosted pattern that breaks the light into small facets rather than the single clean sweep a sunburst gives you. Gold-tone applied indices and dauphine-style hands warm the whole thing up, and the date sits at 4:30 where it interrupts the least.
38.5mm, and That Number Matters
Earlier Cocktail Times ran 40.5mm, which was fine but never quite right for a watch built on 1960s dress proportions. At 38.5mm wide, 45.4mm lug to lug and 11.8mm thick, this one finally sits where it should. The 20mm strap uses quick-release spring bars, so swapping to something darker for evenings takes about fifteen seconds and no tools.
The 4R35: Proven, Not Fancy
Seiko’s 4R35 is the workhorse – 23 jewels, roughly 41 hours of reserve, hand-winding and hacking seconds, which the older 4R generation didn’t always give you. It is not a chronometer and Seiko doesn’t pretend otherwise. What it is, is cheap to service and hard to kill, and you can watch it run through the exhibition screw-down caseback.
Hardlex, Not Sapphire
The crystal is box-shaped Hardlex, and that is the honest trade-off at this price. It keeps the vintage domed profile and the distortion around the edges that goes with it, but it scratches more easily than sapphire. Water resistance is 50m – fine for rain and a sink, not for swimming laps.
The Bottom Line
If you want one mechanical watch that handles an office, a wedding, and a bar without looking like it is trying, the HCB002 is a straightforward answer. The green is the least safe of the three new dials, which is precisely the argument for it.
