Timex TW2V03700: A Solar Field Watch With Sapphire Under the Hood

Timex brought the Expedition back as Expedition North in 2021, and the Field Post Solar is the model that made people take the line seriously. Sapphire crystal, 100 meters of water resistance, a screw-down crown and caseback, and a movement that never needs a battery, at a price where most watches are still shipping mineral glass and a snap-on back.

Gunmetal, Not Steel-Colored

The 41mm stainless steel case wears a bead-blasted gunmetal finish that reads as slightly aged rather than bright. At 12mm thick it sits a little high, and with 20mm lugs it fills a wrist rather than disappearing on one. The screw-down crown and screw-down caseback are what get it to 100 meters, which is more than a field watch strictly needs and exactly as much as you want when you stop thinking about it.

Light Goes In, Four Months Come Out

The green dial passes enough light to feed the photovoltaic cell underneath without looking like a solar panel. A full charge runs roughly four months in the dark, which in practice means you never think about power again. Quartz accuracy, no battery appointments, no winding.

Reading It Is the Whole Point

Full Arabic numerals, an inner 24-hour track, gray minute markers and cream-colored lume on the hands. The khaki-on-khaki palette is a more fashion-forward choice than a strict military reissue would make, and it costs a little contrast compared to stark black and white, but it stays legible and it looks better on the wrist for it. The date sits at three. The green fabric slip-thru strap is woven from 100% recycled plastic and comes off easily if you would rather run leather.

The Bottom Line

Get this if you want a field watch you can stop maintaining: nothing to wind, nothing to replace, and a crystal that will not scuff in the bottom of a backpack. Skip it if you want maximum dial contrast, or if 12mm of case height on a 41mm case is more presence than you like on a smaller wrist.
