Seiko took the 5 Sports field watch and added a compass bezel: a bidirectional steel ring with a knurled hobnail edge and a lumed pearl marking north. Underneath sits the familiar 4R36 automatic, a glossy black dial, and 100m of water resistance.
About The Product
Seiko HDB006: A Field Watch That Can Actually Point North
Seiko’s 5 Sports line has been the enthusiast on-ramp for years, and the 2026 Field Series finally gives it something useful instead of another colorway. The HDB006 wraps a glossy black field dial in a bidirectional compass bezel — line the lumed pearl up with the sun and you get a rough bearing. Whether you ever use it is beside the point. It is a real function at a price where most brands are still printing tachymeters nobody reads.
The Bezel Is the Whole Idea
The steel bezel is brushed and unadorned on top, with a diamond-knurled hobnail edge that gives you something to grip with cold or gloved hands. It turns in both directions, marked N through NW, with a lumed pearl at north. Seiko did not try to dress it up, which is the correct answer here.
A Dial Built to Be Read
The black dial is glossy rather than matte, a small departure from field-watch orthodoxy that reads a little dressier than you would expect from the category. Every Arabic numeral carries LumiBrite, an inner 13–24 hour scale runs around the center for anyone who thinks in 24-hour time, and the day-date sits at three o’clock. Legibility at arm’s length is not in question.
The 4R36: Proven, Not Precious
Inside is Seiko’s 4R36 — 24 jewels, 21,600 vph, roughly 41 hours of reserve, hacking seconds and hand-winding. It is not chronometer-grade and Seiko has never claimed it is. It is the movement Seiko has been building and servicing for well over a decade, and any competent watchmaker can open it without ordering something exotic.
Wearing 41mm
A 48.5mm lug-to-lug keeps the 41mm case honest on a medium wrist, though at 13.2mm thick and 158 grams on the bracelet this is not a shirt-cuff watch. You get curved Hardlex over the dial rather than sapphire, a see-through screw case back, 20mm lugs for easy strap swaps, and 100m of water resistance.
The Bottom Line
Buy this if you want a legible daily automatic with one genuinely useful trick and no pretense about being anything more. Skip it if you need sapphire, or if a glossy dial on a field watch strikes you as the wrong finish.
