Seiko put a compass bezel on its most affordable automatic field watch, and the brown one is the pick of the four. Earth-tone sunray dial, LumiBrite on every numeral, the proven 4R36 inside, and a nylon strap lined in leather.
About The Product
Seiko HDB009: A Compass Bezel on an Entry-Level Automatic
Seiko 5 Sports has been the default answer to “what’s a good first automatic” for years, and the 2026 Field Series adds something the line never had: a rotating compass bezel. The HDB009 is the brown one — earth-tone sunray dial, brown-coated bezel, nylon strap with a leather lining — and it is the version that looks least like it came out of a committee meeting.
The Bezel Actually Does Something
Point the hour hand at the sun, line the bezel up, and you have a rough bearing. It is an old scouting trick, and Seiko has built the scale into a bidirectional steel bezel with a diamond-knurled edge you can turn with gloves on. A lumed pearl marks north. Whether you ever navigate by it is beside the point: it gives the bezel a job, which is more than most rotating bezels in this price bracket can claim.
Brown Done Right
Brown dials go wrong easily. This one does not. The sunray finish keeps it from reading flat under office light, and the cream LumiBrite numerals sit high enough to catch a glance. Seiko finally put lume on every Arabic numeral here, not just the hands and markers, which is the biggest legibility upgrade the 5 Sports line has had in years. An inner 24-hour track and a day-date window at three round it out.
The 4R36 Inside
Twenty-four jewels, 21,600 vph, roughly 41 hours of reserve, hand-winding and hacking seconds. It is not a chronometer and Seiko does not pretend otherwise, but it is the movement any watchmaker can service and that thousands of owners have run for a decade without thinking about it. The see-through caseback lets you watch it work.
The Bottom Line
At 41mm across, 13.2mm thick and 48.5mm lug-to-lug on a 20mm strap, it wears like a real field watch rather than a dress watch in hiking boots. The Hardlex crystal will pick up scratches that sapphire would shrug off, and 100m is daily-wear water resistance, not diving. Neither is a surprise at this price. If you want one automatic that can go camping on Saturday and to work on Monday, this is a hard one to argue with.
