Seiko HDB002: An Ivory-Dial Field GMT That Doesn’t Ask for Much

Entry-level GMT watches used to mean quartz or compromise. The HDB002 is neither. It takes the 5 Sports Field case, drops in Seiko’s 4R34 automatic with an independent 24-hour hand, and wraps the whole thing in an ivory dial that Seiko says was drawn from military outerwear. At 39.4mm it lands in the size range most people actually wear.

The Dial Is the Whole Argument

Ivory is a harder colour to get right than white. Too warm and it looks yellowed; too cool and you’ve just made another white dial. Seiko landed on a soft cream that reads as warm against the polished steel without tipping into fake-patina territory. Large Arabic numerals, an inner 24-hour track, and LumiBrite on the hands and markers keep it legible. The orange 24-hour hand is the only loud thing on the watch, which is exactly where the contrast belongs.

The 4R34: Caller, Not Flyer

Worth being clear about this. The 4R34 is a caller GMT — you set the 24-hour hand independently while the local hour hand stays put. Good for keeping an eye on a time zone you call rather than one you fly to. You get 41 hours of reserve, 24 jewels, hacking seconds, and hand-winding. Rated accuracy is a wide -35 to +45 seconds a day, which is the honest cost of a $450 mechanical GMT.

Built Like a Field Watch, Not a Dress Watch

The fixed steel bezel carries an engraved 24-hour scale, so the second zone is read on the bezel rather than the dial edge. Water resistance is 100m, the caseback is a screw-down exhibition window over the movement, and the crystal is curved Hardlex — durable, but not sapphire, so treat it accordingly. The three-fold clasp with push-button release closes securely on the 20mm bracelet.

Who It Suits

At 13.6mm thick and 47.9mm lug-to-lug, the HDB002 wears a little taller than its diameter suggests. If you want the flattest possible field watch, look elsewhere. If you want a mechanical second time zone, a dial that stays readable, and a bracelet you don’t have to replace, this is a lot of watch for the money.
