G-Shock’s “Cool Eyes” GA-V01 series broke the mold with its alien-inspired dial and butterfly-shaped LCD display. The magnetic Shock Release Hand absorbs impacts and self-corrects, while the 5751 module runs for 10 years on a single battery. 200m water resistant at 74 grams.

G-Shock GAV01-1A: The Watch That Looks Like It Came From Another Planet

The GAV01-1A is G-Shock’s GA-V01 series doing something genuinely new. Nicknamed “Cool Eyes” for its butterfly-shaped digital display and “Alien Watch” by the community, this isn’t another minor variation on an established design. The radial bezel protectors, openwork dial with exposed gear-train motifs, and that unmistakable dual-window LCD create something that actually looks different from every other watch on the shelf. When G-Shock fans started comparing the face to Sonic the Hedgehog’s eyes, Casio leaned in.

The Shock Release Hand

The headline feature is the magnetically attached minute hand. On impact, it detaches and shifts rather than breaking, then returns to the correct position automatically. It’s a clever solution to the age-old problem of hand misalignment after hard knocks. Combined with standard G-Shock shock resistance, the GA-V01 handles abuse that would send most watches to the repair bench.

Ten Years Without a Battery Change

The CR2025 battery runs the 5751 module for approximately 10 years. That’s notable for a non-solar G-Shock. You get world time across 31 zones, a 1/100-second stopwatch, countdown timer, five daily alarms, and dual LED illumination for both the analog face and the digital display. The feature set is comprehensive without being overwhelming.

Wears Big, Weighs Light

At 58.2mm lug-to-lug and 19.6mm thick, this is not a subtle watch. But at 74 grams in full resin construction, it wears lighter than you’d expect from something this visually imposing. The 200-meter water resistance is legitimate G-Shock territory, and the mineral crystal handles daily wear without drama.

Who This Is For

If you want understated, this is not your watch. The GA-V01 is for the person who sees a G-Shock collection full of squares and octagons and wants something that breaks the mold entirely. It’s bold, weird in the best way, and backed by the same toughness that made G-Shock’s reputation.

G-Shock, short for Gravitational Shock, first launched in 1983 after Casio engineer, Kikuo Ibe conceptualized a watch that could have a battery life of 10 years, be water resistance up to 100 meters, and survive a 10 meters drop.  Originally intended as a high-priced specialty item, G-Shocks are now considered to highly regarded collector-worthy timepieces.
