The open aperture at 6:30 is the whole point here. Bulova drops the dial away so you watch the balance wheel of the Miyota 82S0 swing, and the mineral exhibition back lets you check on the rotor from the other side.
About The Product
Bulova 96A270 Surveyor: An Open-Heart Automatic That Doesn’t Overplay It
Open-heart dials go wrong more often than they go right. Cut too big a window and the dial stops being a dial; frame it with too much decoration and the watch turns into a novelty. The Surveyor 96A270 stays on the correct side of that line. The aperture sits low at 6:30, small enough that the black dial still reads as a clean three-hander, big enough that you can actually watch the balance wheel doing its work.
A Dial That Earns the Black
The black surface is not flat paint. A fine concentric texture runs through the centre, an embossed minute track rings the outer edge, and the applied silver markers are beveled so they catch light at an angle. Bulova’s tuning-fork logo marks 12 o’clock. Silver hands with luminous fill handle low light, which is more than most open-heart dials in this bracket bother with.
The Miyota 82S0 Inside
The 82S0 is Miyota’s open-heart caliber, 21 jewels, 21,600 vph, 42 hours of reserve. It hacks and it hand-winds, which is not a given at this price and makes setting it against a phone actually possible. Nobody will call it decorated, but you can see it through the mineral exhibition back, and Miyota calibers are cheap and simple to service years down the line.
42mm That Wears Its Size Honestly
The case is 42mm wide and 11.65mm thick with a 49.5mm lug-to-lug, so it sits flatter than the diameter suggests. Polished and brushed stainless steel, silver-tone throughout, on a three-link bracelet with a push-button deployant clasp and 22mm lugs. Water resistance is 30m, which covers rain and hand-washing and nothing more ambitious than that.
Who It Suits
This is for someone who wants visible mechanics without a skeleton dial shouting about it, and who is fine trading sapphire for mineral crystal to get an exhibition case back at this money. If you want a swim watch or a scratch-proof crystal, look elsewhere. If you want to see the movement move, the 96A270 makes that easy.

The Brand
Bulova is an American brand that dates back to 1875. It’s been around since the days of Joseph Bulova and his business of selling clocks and watches in New York City. His innovations included standardized production of watches and developing the first fully electronic watch with proprietary tuning-fork based technology, the basis for their iconic high-frequency Accutron timepieces, and now, their Precisionist watch and movements.
