A 39mm Surveyor with a white dial, an open aperture at six, and Bulova’s 82S0 automatic running behind a display caseback. Sapphire crystal and a steel bracelet make it the restrained version of the open-heart idea.

Bulova 96A345: A 39mm Surveyor That Shows Its Work

Most open-heart watches make the aperture the whole point, opening the dial up until there is more movement on show than dial left. The 96A345 goes the other way. It is a clean white three-hand dial with a small window at six o’clock, and the balance wheel swinging down there reads as a detail you notice rather than a gimmick you have to explain.

A White Dial That Stays Legible

The dial is white with silver-tone applied markers and luminous hands, and Bulova kept the printing sparse: brand at twelve, “Automatic” at three, a minute track around the edge. At a glance it reads like a normal dress-leaning three-hander. The aperture at six exposes the escapement and balance wheel, framed rather than gaping.

39mm and Sapphire, Not 42mm and Mineral

This matters if you have looked at the older Surveyor automatics. The 96A345 runs a 39mm case at 11.45mm thick, with 46mm lug-to-lug and a 20mm lug width, noticeably more restrained than the 42mm versions in the same family. It also gets an anti-reflective sapphire crystal instead of mineral, which is the single upgrade most likely to matter three years in.

The 82S0 Inside

Power comes from Bulova’s 82S0, a Miyota-based automatic with 21 jewels, hacking seconds, and a 42-hour reserve. It is not a chronometer and Bulova does not pretend otherwise, but it has a long service record and parts that any watchmaker can actually get. The display caseback lets you watch it run.

What to Know Before You Buy

Water resistance is 30m, which covers splashes and handwashing but not swimming. The steel bracelet closes on a deployant clasp with push buttons and matches the silver-tone case finish. If you want a mechanical watch that looks right with a shirt and still gives you something to look at, this is a well-judged 39mm version of that. If you need something you can swim in, Bulova’s Marine Star is the better aisle.

Bulova is an American brand that dates back to 1875. It’s been around since the days of Joseph Bulova and his business of selling clocks and watches in New York City. His innovations included standardized production of watches and developing the first fully electronic watch with proprietary tuning-fork based technology, the basis for their iconic high-frequency Accutron timepieces, and now, their Precisionist watch and movements.
