The 97A182 puts an open-heart aperture on a sunburst champagne dial and backs it with Bulova’s 82S0 automatic, 21 jewels and a 42-hour reserve. At 39mm across and 10.4mm thick, it wears smaller than most gold-tone watches at this price.
About The Product
Bulova 97A182 Surveyor: Gold-Tone Without the Bulk
Gold-tone automatics usually arrive oversized, and the Surveyor 97A182 does not. The case measures 39mm wide and 10.4mm thick with a 46mm lug-to-lug, which is close to the sweet spot for a watch meant to sit under a cuff. What sets it apart from the rest of Bulova’s classic range is the case shape: sculpted, faceted flanks that alternate polished and brushed surfaces instead of the plain round barrel you normally get at this money.
An Open Heart That Earns Its Place
The aperture near six o’clock is the reason most people find this watch. It exposes the balance wheel of the 82S0 automatic, a Miyota-built movement running 21 jewels with a 42-hour power reserve and a hacking seconds hand. You also get a full view of the rotor through the mineral-crystal exhibition window in the caseback, so the mechanics are visible from both sides.
The Dial Does the Work
Champagne is a hard color to get right. Too pale and it reads washed out; too warm and it turns brassy. Bulova landed on a sunburst finish that shifts from near-cream to deep gold as it moves, with applied gold-tone markers and luminous-filled hands. The lume is modest, which is honest for a watch in this category.
Sapphire, and a Bracelet You Can Swap
The flat crystal is anti-reflective sapphire, not the mineral glass that usually shows up at this level. The 3-link gold-tone bracelet closes with a push-button deployant clasp and, more usefully, has quick-release tabs at the 20mm lugs, so changing to leather takes seconds and no tools.
The Trade-Off
Water resistance is 30m, which means splashes and rain and nothing more. Take it off before the pool. If that fits how you actually wear a gold-tone automatic, the 97A182 is a lot of finishing and a lot of visible mechanics for the money.

The Brand
Bulova is an American brand that dates back to 1875. It’s been around since the days of Joseph Bulova and his business of selling clocks and watches in New York City. His innovations included standardized production of watches and developing the first fully electronic watch with proprietary tuning-fork based technology, the basis for their iconic high-frequency Accutron timepieces, and now, their Precisionist watch and movements.
