The dial reads as plain green from across the room, then resolves up close into printed forest ridgelines and mist. Quartz, 40mm brushed steel, 47mm lug to lug, 100m water resistance, and a slip-thru fabric strap on standard 20mm lugs.
About The Product
Timex TW2Y89500: A Field Watch That Hides Its Camo in Plain Sight
From across the room this looks like a muted green field watch. Up close the pattern resolves into layered forest scenery: ridgelines, treetops, a bank of mist. Timex calls it a camo print, which undersells it. It reads more like a topographic illustration printed onto a 40mm dial, and it is the reason this Expedition Sierra is worth a second look rather than a shrug.
Numbers Meant to Be Read
The Arabic numerals use a split, stenciled design, the kind stamped onto military crates, and an inner 5-60 minute index runs just inside them for timing anything longer than a minute. Cream luminant fills the hands and markers. A red seconds hand gives you the at-a-glance confirmation that the watch is still running, and a date window sits at 3.
Genuinely Compact for a Field Watch
40mm across, 11mm thick, 47mm lug to lug. That last number does more work than the first. A 47mm lug span is short, so the case sits inside a smaller wrist rather than hanging off it, and the brushed steel keeps the whole thing quiet. At 61 grams on fabric, it more or less disappears.
Where It Cuts Corners, and Where It Doesn’t
Two honest notes. There is no Indiglo backlight here, which is surprising on an Expedition, so if you have come to rely on that green glow this is not the model for you. And the crystal is mineral rather than sapphire, so it will collect fine marks over years of daily wear. What you do get is 100m of water resistance, double what the earlier Sierras managed, and a double-layer slip-thru strap on standard 20mm lugs that swaps out in about ten seconds.
Who It’s For
Someone who wants a field watch they never have to think about. Quartz means no winding and no Monday-morning resetting, and the SR626SW cell runs roughly three years before it needs attention. Buy it for the dial print and the easy proportions. If you want the toughest thing Expedition makes, look at the Ridge or the Traprock instead.
