Timex TW2Y39600: The Expedition Capstone Grows a Mechanical Heart

The Capstone started life as a quartz field watch, and it was a good one — clean dial, sensible size, no gimmicks. The TW2Y39600 keeps all of that, swaps the battery for a 21-jewel Japanese automatic, and adds the thing enthusiasts have asked Timex for and rarely received: a flat, anti-reflective sapphire crystal. That combination is the whole argument for this watch.

Sapphire, Finally

Timex has historically leaned on acrylic and mineral glass, which is part of why its watches age the way they do. The Capstone Automatic gets flat sapphire with anti-reflective treatment, so the black dial stays readable off-axis instead of throwing back a sheet of glare. Under it sits a full Arabic layout with an inner 24-hour ring — real field-watch furniture, not a decorative nod to it — along with Super-LumiNova on the hands and indices and a date window beside 3 o’clock.

What’s Ticking Inside

The official spec sheet says only “21-jewel Japanese automatic,” though Timex’s own product Q&A names the Miyota 8215 with roughly 40 hours of reserve. That movement has a long, unglamorous record: no hacking seconds, a rotor you can hear spin, and a service cost low enough that nobody agonizes over it. The exhibition caseback lets you watch it work, which is rather the point of fitting one here.

How It Wears

39mm across, 12mm thick, 20mm lugs, brushed steel throughout. The bracelet uses fitted end pieces that close the gap at the lugs, so case and bracelet read as one shape rather than two parts bolted together. At roughly 151 grams it has real heft on the wrist. Water resistance is 50 meters — fine for rain, a sink, or a swim you did not plan, not for diving.

Who Should Buy It

Take it if you want a mechanical field watch you can knock around without flinching, and you value sapphire and a genuine 24-hour dial over movement pedigree. Skip it if you need hacking seconds, a screw-down crown, or more than 50 meters of water resistance. For everyone else, this is the most watch Timex has put under a sapphire crystal in a long while.
