The Marlin finally sized up. Timex kept the domed acrylic crystal and applied indices from the 34mm original, stretched the case to 40mm, and dropped in a 21-jewel Miyota automatic you can watch spin through the display back.
About The Product
Timex TW2W33900: The Marlin Grows Up
The Marlin is the watch that brought Timex back to mechanical watchmaking, and for years it came exactly one way: 34mm, hand-wound, faithful to the 1960s original. The TW2W33900 is the version for everyone who liked the design but wanted something that reads as a modern watch on a modern wrist. Same domed acrylic, same applied indices, 40mm of polished steel around it, and a self-winding movement underneath.
A 1960s Dial at Arm’s Length
The black dial is the quiet star. Applied baton markers and Arabic 12, 3, 6 and 9 sit under a domed acrylic crystal that bends light the way old watches do, with a little distortion at the edges and a warmth that sapphire flattens out. The hands and markers carry lume, which purists will grumble about on a dress-leaning watch, and they have a point. The gold-tone crown against the polished case is a nice bit of period detail.
Miyota, Doing What Miyota Does
Inside is a 21-jewel Miyota automatic, and Timex does not hide it. The exhibition caseback puts the rotor and the TWENTY-ONE JEWELS engraving on display. It stores roughly 40 hours, winds from the crown when it has been sitting, and it is the kind of movement any watchmaker can service without drama. Not decorated, not chronometer-grade, just reliable.
The 13mm Question
At 40mm across and 13mm thick, this is not a thin dress watch, and the proportions run a little chunkier than the mid-century look suggests. It still slides under most cuffs, but if flat is the priority, an Orient Bambino is the honest comparison. The 20mm strap is black leather from a Leather Working Group tannery, fitted with quick-release spring bars, so swapping it takes about ten seconds. Plenty of owners do.
Who It Is For
Someone who wants vintage styling without vintage ownership problems, on a 40mm case that does not feel dainty. Acrylic scratches more easily than sapphire, but it also polishes back out with a cloth and a bit of compound, which is the trade being made here. The 50m rating covers rain and a quick dip, not snorkeling.
