The SSC965 brings Seiko’s Speedtimer formula into a compact 39mm case with a light green sandblast dial and black subdials. V192 solar power, sapphire crystal, and 100m water resistance keep it practical without losing the vintage sports-timing feel.

Seiko SSC965: Speedtimer Goes Green

The Seiko SSC965 takes the modern Prospex Speedtimer shape and gives it the dial that stands out in the trio: a light green, sandblasted surface with black subdials and warm LumiBrite accents. It is still a practical sports chronograph first, but the color gives this version a softer, more playful read than the usual panda layout.

A Dial Built Around Contrast

The dial works because Seiko kept the rest of the watch disciplined. The black registers, tachymeter scale, and steel case keep the layout legible, while the green center keeps it from feeling like another archival remake. At 39mm across and 45.5mm lug to lug, it keeps the Speedtimer footprint compact enough for daily wear.

Solar Timing, No Battery Routine

Inside is Seiko’s V192 solar chronograph movement, with roughly six months of running time when fully charged. You get a 60-minute chronograph measuring in 1/5-second increments, a 24-hour hand, small seconds, power reserve indication, and a date display. It is not mechanical romance; it is accurate, low-maintenance timing.

Prospex Practicality

The case and bracelet are stainless steel, with a curved sapphire crystal and inner anti-reflective coating over the dial. Water resistance is rated to 100 meters, and the screw case back adds everyday confidence. The 20mm lug width also makes strap changes straightforward if you want to move away from the bracelet.

The Bottom Line

This is for someone who likes the Speedtimer look but wants the green dial version that feels current rather than purely vintage. The trade-off is familiar: solar quartz will not satisfy someone chasing a mechanical chronograph, but it makes the SSC965 easier to live with and much less fussy.
