Seiko shrank the Cocktail Time to 38.5mm and put a crushed-ice texture under translucent blue lacquer. The 4R35 automatic winds by hand as well, and the date has moved to 4:30 where it stays out of the dial’s way.

Seiko HCB001: The Cocktail Time, Finally at 38.5mm

For years the knock on the Presage Cocktail Time was proportion. The dials were beautiful, the price was right, and the 40.5mm case was a size too big for the dress-watch job it was auditioning for. The HCB001 fixes that. Same recipe, 38.5mm across, 11.8mm thick, 45.4mm lug to lug — dimensions that sit inside a shirt cuff instead of fighting it.

Crushed Ice, Under Glass

The dial is where Seiko spent the money. A faceted, angular texture is stamped into the base, then covered in translucent blue lacquer that runs from bright at the center to near-black at the rim. Tilt it and the facets break the light in pieces, which is where the “crushed ice” nickname came from. Silver dauphine hands and applied faceted indices do the rest. The date sits at 4:30 rather than 3, so it interrupts the chapter ring instead of the dial.

The 4R35: Familiar, and That’s the Point

Inside is Seiko’s 4R35 — automatic with hand-winding, hacking seconds, 23 jewels, roughly 41 hours of reserve, 21,600 vph. Nobody buys this movement for its numbers. They buy it because every watchmaker on earth knows how to service one and parts cost almost nothing. The see-through screw case back lets you watch it work, which is more than most watches at this price offer.

Hardlex, Not Sapphire

The honest trade-off: the box-shaped crystal is Hardlex, not sapphire. It gives the watch its vintage domed profile and it resists shattering well, but it will pick up hairlines that sapphire would shrug off. Water resistance is 50m — fine for rain and hand-washing, not for swimming laps.

Who It’s For

The HCB001 is the bracelet model of the three; the other two come on leather. That 5-link brushed-and-polished bracelet with its push-button deployment clasp makes this the most wearable of the trio day to day. If you want one mechanical watch that handles an office, a wedding, and a Tuesday, this is a very hard one to argue with.
