About The Product
Casio GA700HDS-7A: G-Shock Goes Bioluminescent
The Casio GA700HDS-7A is G-Shock’s Hidden Glow Series Vol. 2 doing something genuinely interesting with a familiar platform. Take the proven GA-700 base—one of Casio’s bigger analog-digital models—and add a phosphorescent dial that glows blue in the dark, inspired by bioluminescent plankton. It’s the kind of detail that sounds gimmicky until you see it. In daylight, you get a clean white-and-blue watch. In the dark, the dial lights up with an otherworldly blue that fades gradually, like something floating in the ocean at night.
The Glow That Actually Works
The blue phosphorescent resin in the dial face absorbs light throughout the day and releases it as a blue glow when the lights go out. This is separate from the Super LED Illuminator that handles on-demand readability—the phosphorescent effect is passive and atmospheric. Combined with the green Neo-brite lume on the hands, you get genuine dial depth at night. Hit the light button and the LED takes over for actual time-reading. It’s a two-layer system that works better than you’d expect.
Classic GA-700 Under the Hood
Beneath the glow, this is the same GA-700 that’s been a solid mid-range G-Shock for years. Module 5522 quartz with analog-digital display, Hand Shift function that moves the hands out of the way so you can read the digital screens, world time across 31 time zones, 1/100-second stopwatch, countdown timer, and five daily alarms. Battery life is approximately five years on a CR2016. The 53.4mm case with 18.5mm thickness is on the larger side—this is not a subtle watch on smaller wrists.
Built Like You’d Expect
200-meter water resistance and shock resistance are standard G-Shock fare. The all-resin construction keeps weight down to 75 grams, which helps offset the larger case dimensions. Mineral glass crystal is typical for this price range. The white resin band fits wrists from 145 to 215mm with a standard tang buckle.
The Bottom Line
The GA700HDS-7A is for someone who likes G-Shock’s no-compromise durability but wants something a little different from the usual black-on-black lineup. The Hidden Glow feature is genuinely cool without being a gimmick—it gives the watch a personality that most sub-$150 G-Shocks don’t have. If you want the same glow effect in a slimmer package, check the GA2100HDS-7A. If you prefer the GA-700’s bigger presence and analog-digital layout, this is the one.

The Brand
G-Shock, short for Gravitational Shock, first launched in 1983 after Casio engineer, Kikuo Ibe conceptualized a watch that could have a battery life of 10 years, be water resistance up to 100 meters, and survive a 10 meters drop. Originally intended as a high-priced specialty item, G-Shocks are now considered to highly regarded collector-worthy timepieces.
