Bulova calls the dial light blue. Everyone else calls it ice blue. The 39mm Surveyor puts that sunburst dial behind flat sapphire, wraps it in a faceted case, and runs a Miyota 8215 automatic you can watch through the exhibition back.

Bulova 96B469: The Surveyor Goes Ice Blue

Bulova’s spec sheet says light blue. Every dealer listing, forum post and resale page says ice blue, and once you have seen the dial in daylight you understand why the nickname stuck. The 96B469 takes the Surveyor case Bulova introduced a few years back and drops in a pale sunburst dial that reads almost white indoors and turns genuinely blue the moment it catches a window. It is the most interesting thing this watch does, and it is the reason to buy it.

A Case That Is Not Just a Circle

The Surveyor case is 39mm across with sculpted flanks and faceted lugs, brushed on top and polished on the sides. At 11.45mm thick with a 46mm lug-to-lug, it lands in the range that fits most wrists without announcing itself. Flat sapphire with anti-reflective coating covers it, which is not a given at this level.

The 8215, Warts and All

Inside is a Miyota 8215: 21 jewels, 21,600 vph, roughly 42 hours of reserve, and manual winding if you would rather not shake it awake. It is also the caliber famous for a stuttering seconds hand, a side effect of the indirect drive on the center seconds. It does not affect timekeeping at all, but enthusiasts either shrug at it or cannot unsee it. Miyota rates the caliber at -20 to +40 seconds a day, so treat it as reliable rather than precise. The exhibition caseback lets you watch the rotor do its work.

Read the Water Resistance Carefully

This is the honest catch. Bulova rates the 96B469 at 30 meters, and its own product page labels it splash resistant. That means handwashing and rain, not swimming and not the shower. For a dress-leaning automatic on a bracelet that is normal, but do not let the steel bracelet talk you into treating it like a sports watch.

Who Should Buy This

Someone who wants an ice blue sunburst dial, a date with a magnifier, and a proper mechanical movement without paying Grand Seiko or Datejust money for the color. Skip it if you need a watch you can swim in, or if a hesitating seconds hand will bother you every time you check the time.

Bulova is an American brand that dates back to 1875. It’s been around since the days of Joseph Bulova and his business of selling clocks and watches in New York City. His innovations included standardized production of watches and developing the first fully electronic watch with proprietary tuning-fork based technology, the basis for their iconic high-frequency Accutron timepieces, and now, their Precisionist watch and movements.
