The DW-5000R-1A brings back the watch that started G-Shock in 1983. Same iconic square design, same brick-pattern display, same color accents—but with modern internals and bio-based materials. Made at Yamagata Casio, where the original was born.
About The Product
Casio DW-5000R-1A: Where G-Shock Began
In 1983, engineer Kikuo Ibe and Project Team Tough created the DW-5000C—the first G-Shock. The design brief was simple: survive a 10-meter drop, 10-bar water resistance, 10-year battery. The DW-5000R-1A is a faithful revival of that original, updated with current tech but visually almost identical to what changed watchmaking.
The Square That Started It All
That iconic rectangular case with the octagonal bezel? This is where it came from. The brick pattern on the display, the red-blue-yellow color accents—all faithful to the 1983 original. At 42.3mm wide (slightly larger than the original 41.6mm), it wears like the vintage pieces without the fragile old resin.
Modern Under the Hood
The Module 3576 brings this into the present: Super Illuminator LED, full auto-calendar to 2099, 1/100-second stopwatch. Battery life is around 5 years on a CR2016. The stainless steel case maintains the original’s premium feel, while the bio-based resin bezel and band add an environmental angle.
Made Where G-Shock Was Born
Casio manufactures the DW-5000R-1A at Yamagata Casio—the same Japanese facility that produced the original. It’s a detail collectors appreciate. You’re getting the same production heritage alongside the design heritage.
Who This Is For
If you want a G-Shock Square with actual history behind it—not just the aesthetic—this is the one. At 76g with 200m water resistance, it’s light and capable enough for daily wear while carrying four decades of credibility. The entry point to G-Shock’s origin story.
