Casio’s first mechanical watch—yes, really. The EFK-100D puts a Seiko NH35 automatic in a 39mm Edifice case with sapphire crystal and an electroformed dial that replicates forged carbon’s layered texture. At $280, it’s Casio taking on the entry-level automatic segment.

Casio EFK100D-7A: Casio Goes Mechanical

After decades of defining quartz and digital watchmaking, Casio finally made a mechanical watch. The EFK-100D is their entry into automatic movements, using a proven Seiko NH35 caliber housed in an Edifice-style case. It’s a significant move for a brand that built its reputation on the other side of the movement debate.

The Movement Story

Rather than develop their own caliber, Casio went with the Seiko NH35—a workhorse 24-jewel automatic running at 21,600 vph with about 40 hours of power reserve. It hacks and hand-winds, which are features you want. The see-through caseback lets you watch it work, though the movement itself is undecorated (standard for this price point). Accuracy specs of -35 to +45 seconds per day are conservative; most examples run tighter.

That Dial Texture

The white dial isn’t just white—it’s electroformed to replicate the layered, woven appearance of forged carbon. The texture catches light differently across the surface, adding depth without being distracting. Semi-skeletonized hands with faceted sides and lume-tipped points handle the time display, with a date window at 6 o’clock.

Edifice Build Quality

At 39mm across with 43.5mm lug-to-lug, this wears comfortably on most wrists. The case finishing impressed reviewers—sharp brushing, quality bracelet with H-links finished on both sides, and a solid milled clasp. Sapphire crystal and 100m water resistance round out the specs. The weak point is the lume, which is minimal.

The Bottom Line

Casio didn’t need to make a mechanical watch, but they did, and they did it competently. The EFK-100D competes directly with established entry-level automatics from Orient and Seiko’s own budget lines. For $280, you get sapphire, a quality bracelet, and Casio’s attention to case finishing—wrapped in the brand’s first serious attempt at mechanical watchmaking.

Casio was founded in 1946 by Akio Morita, the son of Sony's founder Masaru Ibuka. Casio made the first all-electric digital calculator, which was a technological breakthrough at the time. It also innovated with digital cameras as early as the 1980s, and developed affordable electronic keyboards for musicians. Today, Casio is also a global leader in the manufacture of affordable digital watches.
