Casio’s original stainless steel digital, in production since 1995. The A-168W-1 upgrades the F-91W with a full Electro Luminescence backlight that actually lights the whole display. At 33.5mm wide, it fits wrists that most modern watches ignore.

Casio A-168W-1: The Watch That Refused to Go Away

The Casio A-168W-1 has been in continuous production since 1995, and there’s a reason for that. While the watch world chases complications and heritage narratives, this $50 digital has quietly become one of the most recognizable watches on the planet. It’s the stainless steel upgrade to Casio’s legendary F-91W, and for a lot of people, it’s the better buy.

The Illuminator Advantage

The headline feature here is the Electro Luminescence backlight. Where the F-91W gives you a dim green LED that barely lights up half the display, the A-168W-1’s Illuminator floods the entire screen with an even blue glow. It’s genuinely useful in dark rooms, movie theaters, or checking the time at 3 AM without blinding yourself. The module also packs a 1/100-second stopwatch, daily alarm with hourly time signal, and an auto calendar that handles the short months for you.

Retro Steel, Not Retro Price

The stainless steel bracelet is what sets the A168 apart from its resin-cased siblings. The three-link design tapers from 22mm at the case to 15mm at the clasp, giving it proportions that actually look intentional on smaller wrists. At 33.5mm wide and under 10mm thick, it wears like a watch from an era when watches were meant to slide under a shirt cuff. The resin case gets a chrome-effect metallic finish that blends seamlessly with the bracelet. It’s not fooling anyone into thinking it’s a $500 watch, but it doesn’t need to.

30 Years of Good Enough

Water resistance is rated at 30 meters — fine for hand washing, not for swimming. The acrylic crystal will pick up scratches over time, but at this price point, that’s character, not damage. Battery life is quoted at seven years on a single CR2016 cell. The A-168W-1 doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t. It’s accurate to within 30 seconds per month, it weighs next to nothing at 49 grams, and it does exactly what a digital watch should do without any fuss. If you want a daily beater with some vintage style that won’t make you cry if it gets knocked around, this is it.

Casio was founded in 1946 by Akio Morita, the son of Sony's founder Masaru Ibuka. Casio made the first all-electric digital calculator, which was a technological breakthrough at the time. It also innovated with digital cameras as early as the 1980s, and developed affordable electronic keyboards for musicians. Today, Casio is also a global leader in the manufacture of affordable digital watches.
