This next generation G-Shock evolved from the DW-5000 and AW-500 Series

The octagonal bezel is one of the most striking features of the GA2100 series and the inspiration came from the iconic design of the DW-5000. For this series, G-Shock also referenced the AW-500 minimalist design to serve as the basis for of their slimmest, most compact form factor to date.  The new case of the GA-2100 series still manages to deliver all the strength of its predecessors intact, a feat achieved by its new Carbon Core Guard structure.

The GA2100 model is derived from the iconic design of the DW-5000, inheriting the octagonal bezel and it’s slim compact form factor.  G-Shock also adopted the simplicity and analog-digital dial of the AW-500.  To merge these elements into a slim yet rugged package required a new form factor to be developed – giving rise to the Carbon Core Guard structure.

1983: It all started with the DW-5000

The first G-SHOCK, the DW-5000, was released in 1983. Its timeless design was born of a pursuit of the ultimate toughness and was not influenced by extraneous elements.

1989: AW-500

The AW-500 was the first analog G-SHOCK model and was released in 1989. This concept was realized with a rock-solid design that looked almost like it was carved out of a single block of resin, removing everything non-essential.

2019: The GA-2100

The GA-2100 watch was the first to expand the possibilities of toughness and analog style. The latest technologies allowed it to capture the essence of their identities in a new physical form. This meant creating a new standard-bearer for G-SHOCK, re-envisioning from the vantage point of the brand’s beginnings, now some 30 years after the debut of the DW-5000 and AW500.

New Design Made Possible With Technology

The development concept for the GA2100 was to keep it slim and compact. The determination to avoid the extraneous realized not only in design, but also in size as well. It took revolutionary new technologies, from the thin module to the Carbon Core Guard structure, to achieve this. A reconstructed form that is sure to integrate well with contemporary lifestyles and fashion is the result of the very essence of the original DW-5000 design.

From Paris, Hamburg, New York to Shanghai, design feedback and inspiration was gathered from around the globe.  In a process of trial and error, countless sketches were made and designs were drawn and reviewed. The final watch features a minimalist design with an octagonal bezel.

Octagonal “Power” Bezel

Since the very first G-SHOCK, the octagonal design motif has been maintained. An expression of power that is worthy of the G-SHOCK is created by the outline of a sense of stability.

Minimalist Design

It was possible to slim the case to the limit with the use of the latest construction techniques. The side profile design pays homage to the very first model with its button layout, even surface form and fixed-angle band

Depth Defined Dial

To achieve a sense of depth, the dial features a minute-mark-notched dial ring, three-dimensional index cuts, a mode dial and irregular shaped LCD in a sweetly balanced arrangement. The spacious layout makes for a simple face design with good visibility.

Monochromatic Color

There is a thoroughly fashion-conscious color scheme for the GA-2100 line. 9 different shades of red can be found in the GA-2100-4A. The application of a different shade for each component, from the case exterior to the dial, dial ring, hands, LCD, buckles and more gives the watch an overall integrated look, while bringing out an irresistible textural feel in its detailing.

Technology in the G-Shock GA2100

The module is protected with a carbon fiber-reinforced resin case. The special characteristics of the carbon fiber material — light weight, high strength and superior weather resistance — were leveraged to make the case as slim and compact as possible, with no compromise on shock resistance.

Thinner Case but Equally Strong

The developers kept the original G-SHOCK criteria for shock resistance in mind. They slimmed the module down to 11.8mm while strengthening the external structure.

High Density Components

The module was slimmed down by miniaturizing the componentry and using high density mounting for the circuit board structure. These efforts were combined with the Carbon Core Guard structure to make for a smaller, slimmer case.
